Careful positioning of lamps, spotlights and overhead lighting can create a truly stunning ambiance at home, but unless you’re a professional interior designer it can be incredibly difficult to get the balance right. And what you don’t want to do is spend lots of money in different areas, only to switch the lights on to realise that you’ve got it completely wrong.
Of course, you want to maximise the amount of natural light you have flooding into your home (which products like curtain wall windows and similar are brilliant for), but it’s also important to focus on diffusing the other light sources you have at home in the right way to create the kind of atmosphere you’re looking for.
It’s important to remember that different parts of the house will have different lighting needs. So, for example, you’ll want to have brighter lighting, spotlights and strip lights in the kitchen because you’ll need to be able to see properly for cooking, but you might want to have softer lighting in your dining room to establish a warm, welcoming and cosy dining experience for friends and family.
A big misconception that homeowners often have when lighting a space is that the entire room needs to be well lit. This isn’t necessary at all and you might want to try incorporating numerous light sources as an alternative, which all blend well together.
Installing dimmer switches is a great idea because this means you can control the light levels easily and will give you greater flexibility room by room. And that’s not to mention how much energy these switches can help you save – a growing concern these days, with climate change and our impact on the planet increasingly in the news as time goes on.
Think about the kind of bulb you’re buying as well. Fluorescents look very sterile and you might feel that your home smacks of a hospital waiting room, rather than a cosy, comfortable space that you want to spend time in… which is what good interior design is really all about, after all.
If you’ve got a very dark room that doesn’t have much natural light coming into it, there’s no need to despair. There are a couple of little tricks you can try that should help bring it to life. For example, try bringing in a colourful rug, which can really help energise a space.
And never forget the power of the humble mirror. You can use these to great effect in a dark room, since mirrors will bounce light off reflective surfaces, making the room feel bigger and brighter. If there is a window in this part of the house, avoid hanging big, heavy curtains as this will make the room feel even smaller. Instead, use something like a blind or a translucent shade to allow light to come in.
