If you are specifying new windows for a self-build, an extension or a renovation and keep coming across the term “Aluclad”, you are not alone. It has become one of the most searched window types in the UK – and for good reason.
Aluclad windows represent a meaningful step forward in residential glazing, combining the best qualities of two well-established materials into a single, high-performing composite window system.
This guide explains clearly what Aluclad windows are, how they are constructed, why they have become such a popular choice for design-conscious homeowners and architects, and where they are most effectively specified.
What are Aluclad windows?
Aluclad windows – also referred to as aluminium clad windows or clad timber windows – are a type of composite window built around an engineered timber core with an external aluminium cladding bonded to the outer face of the frame.
The result is a window that looks and feels like natural wood on the inside, while presenting a durable, weather-resistant aluminium exterior to the elements outside.
It is a genuinely hybrid construction. The interior wood delivers the natural warmth, structural integrity and excellent thermal insulation that timber windows are valued for. The external aluminium cladding provides the weather resistance, dimensional stability and minimal maintenance that aluminium windows are known for.
Neither pure timber nor pure aluminium achieves both of these things equally well. Aluclad windows do.
How are they constructed?
Understanding the manufacturing process helps clarify why Aluclad windows perform as well as they do.
The timber core – typically engineered redwood, European oak, hardwood or Accoya – is precision-machined and jointed using mortise and tenon construction, then finished internally with a factory-applied microporous paint or stain. This internal finish breathes with the timber, maintaining its character over time.
The aluminium profiles are then fitted to the exterior face of the timber frame, forming a protective outer shell. These aluminium profiles are powder coated – available across the full RAL classic colour range – giving the window frame its finished appearance externally and adding an extra layer of protection against harsh weather conditions.
Thermal breaks within the aluminium profiles prevent cold bridging at the frame, interrupting heat transfer between the warm interior and the cold exterior. Warm edge spacer bars within the glazing unit further reduce heat loss at the perimeter of the glass. Together, these details make a significant difference to thermal performance.

The key benefits of Aluclad windows
Excellent thermal insulation
The combination of a timber core and thermal breaks produces some of the strongest insulation values available in residential windows. Zyle Fenster’s Aluclad Passivhaus window achieves a Uw value of 0.79 W/m²K – certified to meet Passivhaus standards, making it a credible specification for low-energy new builds and EnerPHit retrofit projects.
Minimal maintenance
The aluminium exterior requires no painting, staining or seasonal treatment. It is resistant to UV, moisture and the kind of weather conditions typical of a UK climate. The interior wood benefits from a factory-applied finish that protects it from the outset, and periodic light maintenance keeps it in good condition for decades.
Design flexibility
Aluclad windows are available in a wide range of configurations. Zyle Fenster’s range includes:
- EcoTherm Flush Casement – clean-lined flush casement windows suited to both traditional and contemporary architecture
- Europa Tilt and Turn – dual-function opening for modern homes requiring both ventilation control and ease of cleaning
- Aluclad Pivot – architecturally striking pivot windows designed for generous natural light and bold design statements
- Aluclad Passivhaus – certified triple-glazed windows engineered for Passivhaus and near-passive projects
Superior durability
Aluminium does not rot, warp or corrode in the way that untreated timber can. The external aluminium cladding provides consistent protection across the life of the window, without any compromise to the beauty of timber internally.
Are Aluclad windows worth the investment?
Aluclad windows typically cost more than standard timber or uPVC alternatives, but the gap narrows considerably when whole-life performance is considered. The combination of reduced energy bills, low maintenance costs and longevity – often 40 to 60 years with appropriate care – makes them a cost-effective choice over time for homeowners who are building or renovating to a high standard.

Where are Aluclad windows most commonly specified?
Aluclad windows are well suited to a range of project types, including:
- Modern new builds – particularly architect-led homes where slim aluminium profiles and a contemporary look are required externally, with a warm natural timber finish inside
- Self-build and custom homes – where clients want a genuinely bespoke window specified to their exact requirements in size, finish and performance
- Period property renovations – where the interior wood grain and paintable aluminium exterior allow the window to complement traditional architecture without the maintenance burden of full timber
- Passivhaus and low-energy projects – where certified thermal performance at the window frame is critical to achieving the building’s energy target
How do Aluclad windows compare to other types of windows?
| Window type | Interior finish | Maintenance | Thermal performance | Typical application |
| Aluclad | Natural timber | Low | Excellent | Premium residential, Passivhaus |
| Timber | Natural timber | Higher | Good | Period properties, heritage |
| Aluminium | Aluminium | Low | Good | Commercial, contemporary |
| uPVC | Plastic | Very low | Moderate | Standard residential |
Aluclad windows occupy the top tier of residential glazing – combining the aesthetic appeal of wooden windows with the weather resistance and energy efficiency that modern homes demand.
