What Is Passivhaus and Why Does It Matter?

Passivhaus is a tried and tested building performance standard, not a brand – applicable to any building type, anywhere. Achieving Passivhaus certification means the building has been designed and built to deliver space heating and cooling energy savings of up to 90% compared to conventional building stock.

The standard prioritises airtightness, insulation, and the careful management of heat gains and losses. Windows and doors are critical to achieving this, which is why the choice of glazing system – its U-values, frame performance, and installation detailing – has a direct impact on whether a building reaches certification.

In a Passivhaus-certified building, internal surface temperatures remain consistently close to the ambient indoor air temperature – even during extreme outdoor conditions. This is achieved through a combination of highly insulated building fabric and high-performance glazing that minimises heat loss in winter and unwanted solar gain in summer.
