Triple glazed

When it comes to making homes more energy efficient, warmer and reducing external noise, triple glazed windows are the optimal choice.

What is a triple glazed window?

Whereas double glazed windows contain two planes of glass within a sealed frame, triple glazed windows, as the name suggests, contain three. There is a pocket of air or inert gas (typically argon) between each pane that will act as an insulator for heat and noise.

The extra pane of glass goes between the internal and external pane, creating two airlocks instead of one. This provides a 50% improvement in energy performance when compared to double glazed windows.

Benefits of triple glazing

The myriad benefits of triple glazed windows are chiefly related to comfort.

Warmer – In terms of thermal comfort levels, a triple glazed window will perform better than a double glazed window as it will hang on to heat better.

Less noise – Whereas double glazed windows usually have an acoustic performance in the Rw32 range, triple glazing will provide performance in the low 40s. If you live on a noisy road, for example, this can make all the difference when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.

Reduced condensation – Because triple glazed windows offer very low U values, they are excellent at minimising condensation because internal heat reacts less with lower external temperatures.

How much do triple glazed windows cost?

Although triple glazed windows have a reputation of costing a lot more than double glazed windows, you may be surprised to learn there is actually not much in it. Typically the extra cost is around the 20% mark. However, when you combine this with the significant energy savings of the former, investing in triple glazing makes a great deal of financial sense, as this extra outlay will be recouped.
